One of the biggest problems with internet marketing is there is so much stuff on the net about how to advertise, it’s hard to know what advice to follow. It is very easy to be led up the garden path and way too many have. I guess I’m compounding the situation by writing this post but it is so disturbing to me that I do feel that I have to say something.
Do You Understand Product Marketing?
The problems stem from the fact that most people don’t understand what marketing is.
Most people assume that just simply getting their product out there will result in sales. This just simply isn’t true. The idea that “if you build it they will come” didn’t even work for the movie in reality. The truth is that word got out as a result of the building and so essentially it was the word of mouth and curiosity marketing that got “them to come”.
Others see the ads on TV and think that as long as they do something clever that people will buy their product. What these people don’t see is the amount of effort that has gone into knowing the target audience that the ad is aimed at and being sure that that group is Targeted.
Then some think that marketing is selling.

“There will always, one can assume,
be a need for some selling. But the
aim of marketing is to make selling
superfluous. The aim of marketing is
to know and understand the
customer so well that the product
or service fits him and sells itself.”
One business person I have been working with learned that they needed a blog to promote their product. So they started one. But they were under the impression that they had to plug their product in every single post and included little else in their content.
The result was that little to no one was reading their post because they were boring and rapidly became out of date.
They were amazed at the difference it made to their overall readership, not just the traffic of their blog when, instead of saying to people “buy, buy” I got them to place a simple ad in the post itself that goes to their product. The content could now be informative and a whole lot of other related topics opened up.
