“How to Start an Online Business for Free” is a headline that pops up from time to time. Someone claiming that they can get you started a business and make money for free. That it will cost you nothing to set up and run and it will make you money. I’m always a bit amused that the courses out there say, “You can make money online and it won’t cost you a cent”. That is not the funny bit because I know that it is perfectly true. What amuses me is the inevitable next line that says, “If you buy my course I will tell you how”.
Seriously?
If I need to start a business and I have no money how am I going to afford to buy that course?
Ironically these courses always do have some good hints in them but from my point of view, they are a bit of a scam. I know I was desperate enough to pay for them. But I still think that anybody who prays on somebody with no money is a con artist and I would never completely trust what they say.
So is it really possible to start an online business and make money for free?
Well, the answer is yes you can if you are willing to put in some serious learning and effort.

1. Online Marketplaces To Make Money For Free:
If you need money quickly then the only way I know to get money quickly, like within a week or so, if you have no money, is to sell something. eBay and Gumtree are two widely recognized online marketplaces that allow you to list products for free. EBay has a much bigger customer base but also has the heftiest of fees so you get less money for what you have sold.
You can also sell on Facebook Market Place (just type it into your browser). To start with try selling all that good stuff just lying around your house. If you don’t have any good stuff just lying around your house then read on as there are still ways to get stuff to sell. Take advantage of eBay and Gumtree’s massive user bases to gain exposure and access to potential customers without any initial investment.
2. Offer Pre-orders:
Before investing in inventory, consider offering pre-orders on eBay or Gumtree. This approach not only helps validate your product ideas but also generates revenue upfront, which can be used to fund your initial inventory purchase.
2. Print-on-Demand:
If you have a creative flair, print-on-demand (POD) services can be an excellent option for you to make money for free. POD allows you to design custom merchandise like t-shirts, mugs, and more. When a customer places an order, the POD provider prints and ships the product on your behalf. Platforms like Etsy, eBay, and Gumtree are great places to showcase your unique designs.
3. Affiliate Marketing:
Affiliate marketing is a fantastic way to earn a commission by promoting other people’s products or services. Joining affiliate programs on eBay’s Partner Network or various affiliate platforms will enable you to generate income by driving traffic and sales to their products.
4. Dropshipping:
I will be discussing this in an upcoming article. But if you can find a good dropshipper you may be able to use them to supply products to sell. But there are some caveats doing things this way so I would wait until you read about them later in the series.
With this method, you don’t need to hold any inventory. Instead, you partner with suppliers who handle storage and shipping. You list their products on your online store or marketplace (such as eBay) and only purchase the items after a customer makes a purchase from you. The supplier then ships the product directly to the buyer and you make money for free.
If sourcing physical products is a problem for you or you just simply don’t want the hassle of constantly updating listings, there are other ways to make money online. But they won’t be quick.
5. Blogging:
Blogging is an invaluable tool for effectively selling products in today’s digital landscape. Firstly, it provides an ideal platform to showcase and promote products in a more engaging and personal manner. By crafting compelling and informative content, businesses can build trust and credibility with their audience, leading to increased customer loyalty. Additionally, blogs allow companies to target specific niches and demographics, tailoring their content to address the unique needs and interests of potential customers.
As blogs are shareable across various social media platforms, they can amplify brand exposure and reach a wider audience. Regularly updating blogs with fresh content also enhances SEO rankings, driving organic traffic to the website and increasing the likelihood of conversion so you can make money for free. Overall, blogging proves to be an essential marketing strategy, enabling businesses to connect authentically with their audience, establish authority in their industry, and ultimately boost sales and revenue.

On the positive side, participating in surveys can be a convenient way to earn extra income from the comfort of one’s own home. They typically require minimal effort and do not demand specific skills, making them accessible to a wide range of individuals.
Surveys often cover diverse topics, allowing participants to provide their opinions and insights, contributing to market research and product development. Moreover, survey platforms are abundant, offering a variety of options to choose from. However, there are also drawbacks to consider.
Surveys may not always yield substantial earnings, with payments often being modest and irregular. Some survey providers may require a high volume of completed surveys before cashing out, making it time-consuming. Additionally, participants may encounter scams or unreliable survey sites that fail to pay as promised. Consequently, it is crucial to research reputable survey platforms and manage expectations regarding potential earnings when considering this method of making money.
However, since this article is about building a business without any money, in a later article I will talk about how you can take advantage of surveys to boost potential sales so of your product.

Team up with other online sellers to mutually promote each other’s businesses. For instance, if you’re selling handmade jewellery on eBay, collaborate with a Gumtree seller offering complementary accessories. By cross-promoting, you can expand your reach without spending money on marketing.
9. Participate in Online Market Events:
eBay often hosts promotional events or special market days. Keep an eye out for these opportunities, as they can provide additional exposure to your listings and attract more potential buyers. Additionally, Gumtree might have local meet-up events where you can showcase your products to interested buyers in person.
10. Leverage Email Marketing:
Build an email list by offering valuable content or exclusive discounts to potential customers. Use this list to inform subscribers about your latest eBay auctions or Gumtree listings. Email marketing is a cost-effective way to engage with your audience and boost sales.

Once you have an income stream and can afford to buy bulk products you can then afford to take advantage of Amazon and other online systems. But that is more advanced and you need to wait until you have much more experience.
